Bounded rationality and small worlds

We consider conditions under which the representation of the world available to a boundedly rational decision-maker, whose awareness increases over time, constitutes an adequate ‘small world’ (in the sense of Savage 1954) for the assessment of a given decision. Equivalently, we consider whether boundedly rational decision-makers who gradually become aware of all relevant contingencies, can purs...

Foundations of Boundedly Rational Choice and Satisficing Decisions

Formally, the orthodox rational agent’s “Olympian” choices, as Simon has called orthodox rational choice, are made in a static framework. However, a formalization of consistent choice, underpinned by computability, suggests by, satisficing in a boundedly rational framework is not only more general than the model of “Olympian” rationality, it is also consistently dynamic. This kind of naturally ...

Boundedly Rational and Emotional Agents Cooperation, Trust and Rumor

Computer-based agents, in various forms, are becoming actively involved in our personal and professional decisions and deliberations. We interact with them; they interact with each other. In this paper we describe a broad Model Social Agent study where we explore how boundedly-rational agents with emotion behave across increasingly social contexts, and the impact of cooperation, trust, rumor, a...

Lying for Strategic Advantage: Rational and Boundedly Rational Misrepresentation of Intentions By

Starting from Hendricks and McAfee's (2000) example of the Allies' decision to feint at Calais and attack at Normandy on D-Day, this paper models misrepresentation of intentions to competitors or enemies. Allowing for the possibility of bounded strategic rationality and rational players' responses to it yields a sensible account of lying via costless, noiseless messages. In many cases the model...

Consumer choice and revealed bounded rationality

We study two boundedly rational procedures in consumer behavior. We show that these procedures can be detected by conditions on observable demand data of the same type as standard revealed preference axioms. This provides the basis for a non-parametric analysis of boundedly rational consumer behavior mirroring the classical one for utility maximization.
